I've been recently working on temperate terrestrial planets that contain life. These planets by far are going to be the most complicated to generate. One issue with these planets, is that I want it so that light shines on the dark side from civilization, while the side facing the sun is lit up from the sunlight. Doing this is rather tricky, and I thought I came up with a solution using surfaces in game maker. It worked perfectly when I tested it alone, but when testing it in the massive 500,000 by 500,000 room where the solar systems are generated, it failed to work because the memory overloaded. This is disappointing to say the least.
Instead, I'm going to make it so that the entire planet sprite turns to face the sun, and it will have the city lights built into the model. Hopefully this will look alright.
