The Fall of Earth
During the 21st century, humanity flourished. Science and medicine improved to a point, that the life expectance around the world grew to be at least 80 years of age. Technologies like self-driving cars, powerful personal computers, and smart phones became the new norm. The world became connected by the internet, and the social cultures of humanity drastically changed to accommodate it. As Nigeria grew into the position as a world super power, and the rest of the developing world slowly lost their poverty status, both the consumption of resources and the world’s population went out of control. In order to gain more resources like the precious earth metals, corporations set out for the stars and built colonies in the asteroid belt and on mars, since the technology for getting to these faraway places had become rather cheap and travel time was under a few months. This created new economies on other planets, and new industries developed on these planets to provide these people with goods and services. As the colonies grew, the nations of the world squabbled a bit over extraterrestrial land, until a treaty was made that split it up between different nations.
Then, the 22nd century came, and the golden age of humanity had passed. Scientists knew by this point that the burning of fossil fuels was a problem, because of the creation of greenhouse gasses. However, they failed at finding a resource that could replace it, so it was used at an ever increasing rate. The world’s skies slowly turned black with smog, and the World Health Organization declared the outdoor air in many regions to be unsafe to breathe without a breathing apparatus. Because of this, respiratory illness skyrocketed, and breathing masks became commonplace in the world’s cities. Meanwhile, pollution and overconsumption of the world’s resources caused a massive wave of animal and plant extinctions that filled news headlines around the globe.
Overconsumption of water in certain regions of the world began an eternal drought. In Africa, this drought started many wars, known as the Water Wars. In the United States, millions migrated from the state of California, because the Colorado River had finally run dry, and there was nothing left to irrigate the fields there. Food prices rose to extreme heights, and the world began to go backwards again, as death rates rose due to hunger in poorer regions of the world. Due to the increase in food prices, hydroponic farming became much more cost effective, and these advanced farms sprang up around the globe, averting the water crises in richer regions because these farms allow farming with less water.
In Europe, the European Union was long gone, and the various nations of the region were squabbling with one another, as Islamophobia rose to an all time high. Some states began to make internment camps for Islamic people, and other nations who were against this and who had a larger Islamic population allied against these states. In the year 2216, a war broke out in this region, as Russia started conquering Eastern European states. The nuclear powers of the region aimed their missiles at one another, ready to strike at any moment.
In southwest Asia, China annexed North Korea, and declared the rest of Indo-China to be annexed. In retaliation, the rest of Asia allied against China, and a terrible war began. India declared war on China as well, and Pakistan declared war on India.
In the year 2230, the world bathed in nuclear fire. Not a single human on the planet was left alive, and humans from mars watched as the world glowed through telescopes. The only humans left, were those living in colonies throughout the solar system. Now that they were alone, it became their responsibility to continue the human race.
The Struggle in Space
The first challenges of humanity after the fall of earth, were to become self-sufficient without monthly supplies arriving from the planet. A few colonies struggled greatly, and many died out during this time period as their vital resources ran dry. Only the most modern and advanced colonies continued to exist, and even these struggled. The colonies in space had no source of rocket fuel, for instance, and it took a century before they could build the required plants to produce it on mars fuel journeys through space again.
The corporations that managed the colonies quickly evolved into the new governments of the human race. Democracy ceased to exist for the most part, as oligarchies became the new norm. These corporations included the New Earth Company and the Final Frontier Company on Mars, the Luna Mining Company on the moon, and many smaller companies. The golden age of freedom on earth became a distant memory.
List of Corporations during these years:
Luna – 20 million people
o SpaceX – Hired by NASA in the year 2025 to build a colony on the moon, Lunar Construction became well known as humanity’s first extraterrestrial producer of spacecraft. The company eventually also became a lunar mining corporation, and a manufacturer of top of the line life support systems.
o Yueliang Mining Company - Created as an affiliate of the CNSA (China National Space Agency) in the year 2039, the Luna Mining company was founded in order to both alleviate the overpopulation of China, and to gather precious resources from the lunar surface.
Mars – 50 million people
o The New Earth Company – Created in China in the year 2021, the New Earth Company led the first successful commercial operation in space when they built New Earth Colony on mars. This colony revolutionized the space industry, and showed how easy it was to live in underground bunkers while solar panels on the ground provided all the energy necessary for survival. This small colony grew in size, and over the years other colonies were built around it as the company remained the largest corporation in space.
o Red Rock Industries – A Japanese company, Red Rock Industries built their first colony on the Martian planet in the year 2029, becoming the third corporation in the new space race.
o The Final Frontier Company – An American company, the Final Frontier aimed to turn mars into what the west in America was for Americans in the 1800s: a vast oasis of untapped natural resources for the taking. Its first colony was built in the year 2052. In traditional American fashion, democracies were established in the Final Frontier’s colonies. However, these democracies were abolished after the fall of Earth.
o Galactic Colonies - This organization based in Germany became the first corporation to establish a government in outer space in the year 2044. However, this democratic government changed into an oligarchy after the fall of Earth, much like their counterparts.
o Industries International – This company based in Nigeria formed a colony on mars in 2039, in order to tap the planet for precious earth metals.
o Alphabet Industries – This American company, which had monopolized many industries including technology, used its influence to build a cluster of bio domes on the Martian surface. This company eventually evolved into the American Democratic State of Rochelle, and was one of the few remaining democracies after the fall of Earth.
o English Colonies – This English company quickly became a powerful presence on the Martian surface after they entered the second space race in 2038, forming a democratic entity on Mars. Like most colonies, the colonies of this company devolved into oligarchy after the fall of Earth.
The Asteroid Belt – 20 million people
o
Titan – 20 million people
o Titan City – considered to be a mere joke by most when it was first announced, Titan City was built by the Indian Space Agency as a way to alleviate population issues by sending people to the planet. The city sprawled into a massive metropolis of air locked hallways and caverns, and attracted many migrants from all over Earth.
Venus – 1 million people
o Icarus Station – Built originally by Alphabet Industries, Icarus Station was made as a staging point for sending mining drones to the planetary surface of Venus. The colony eventually attracted many settlers, and many additions were made to the station to accommodate them as it became a small city.
Scientists all over Mars began work on creating terraforming technology to convert the planet into an earth-like environment. On Icarus Station floating over Venus, scientists began to make breakthroughs in the field of terraforming, and began to destroy the layers of greenhouse gases that made the planet so inhabitable. It was estimated the planet would be earthlike in another 500 years.
Eventually, the hyperdrive was invented in the year 2354, by the man Chao Gang of the New Earth Company. Using this revolutionary technology, it became possible for the human race to set out to the stars. After Chao’s discovery, a sort of space race emerged between the oligarchies, as other human civilizations struggled to replicate it. Meanwhile, the New Earth Company built their first colonies in other star systems.
Angry that the technology wasn’t being shared, the Final Frontier Company declared war on the New Earth Company. This was the first human war since the fall of Earth, and resulted in entire colonies being vaporized across the planet. Many of the other corporations allied with the Final Frontier Company, and overwhelmed the New Earth Company.
Forced to surrender, the New Earth Company gave up their hyperdrive technology in order to end the fighting. Soon, corporations all over the solar system were sending out ships to colonize planets in other star systems. The age of Corporate space had begun.
The First Colonies
Humanity began its expansion into other star systems besides the Solar System. Hyperdrive Technology allowed travel between the closest stars in a matter of weeks. Not many ships went too far out however, due to not having enough fuel to go farther. The result of this was a small bubble of colonies appearing around the stars in the vicinity of Sol. The various corporations were not at all peaceful with one another, and soon began to fight over territory. Alpha Centrari B, being the most habitable would found since earth, was a center of conflict. Being the first corporation to land on the planet, The New Earth Company claimed it belonged to it entirely. However, almost every other corporation had claims on the planet as well. Within a decade after the discovery of the hyperdrive, Alpha Centrari B had so many migrants that it gained almost 30 million migrants. They were mostly clustered around Alpha City, a sprawling industrial center with a population of 8 million, controlled by the New Earth Company.
Since the land of the planet was contested, it wasn’t long before the corporations declared war on each other once again. This time, there were few alliances, and each corporation fought for themselves besides a few pacts. Fear rose that the endless wars would escalate into nuclear exchanges. In order to combat this fear, antimissile technology was heavily developed to the point that it was super effective at stopping long range warheads. As fuel started to be produced on Alpha Centrari B, ships were sent out even further into the stars to build more colonies. The world of New Earth was discovered to have life forms on it, the first alien life discovered by humanity. At the height of the wars, a nuclear device detonated in Alpha City killing millions. No one knows who detonated it.
Many of the humans on Alpha Centrari B eventually formed their own governments, and made peace with one another. The people got tired of the fighting, and fought for their own independence. This started a period of small states that appeared across the planet. The states slowly allied into a group known as the Centrari Union, a European Union-esque trade partnership. Similar rebellions occurred across the stars, and the age of corporations ended. In the Solar System, the remaining corporations allied to form the Conglomerate, which controlled the entirety the system.
The Rise of Two Powers
Over the next century, Centrari grew in population and become a center of humanity, while industry on mars exploded as well. The two governments, the Centrari Union and the Conglomerate, became rivals. The Conglomerate maintained control over planets in the galactic east, while in the galactic west planets remained largely independent.
More planets are discovered in new star systems, and humanity expanded in this way for almost a century.
As the Conglomerate expanded, they were prevented from taking land in the galactic west by the powerful Centrari Union. However, in the galactic east they managed to build many colonies on distant planets, becoming a the most powerful government in human space.
Meanwhile, in the galactic west, the “free worlds”, each which had its own established government, were largely at peace with one another, though there were a few regions that had conflicts. However, as humanity spread farther westward, several “warlord colonies” emerged. These cultures were based around constant warfare with one another, and were often led by strong family lines.
On the fringes of human space, contact is made with alien races at this point. However, beyond that, not much is exchanged.
Tensions between the Conglomerate and the Centrari Union rose. In the year 2523, the same year that Mars was declared officially habitable due to improved terraforming technologies (200 years before the predetermined date), the Conglomerate started a trade embargo on all of the free worlds including the Union. A cold war began, as governments in the galactic east and the galactic west grew in military might in preparation for a conflict. In 2556, fighting between the two galactic superpowers began, the free world’s coalition led by the Centrari Union against the Conglomerate. Many of the distant free worlds chose to stay out of the conflict, angering those who were forced to get involved because it was on their borders. Several nuclear detonations occurred on many of the free worlds, while the Conglomerate claimed it wasn’t them. In the year 2578, the Conglomerate invaded Alpha Centrari B, and by 2581 they Conglomerate had been pushed back out of the planet by the Union. In the following years, the allied free world coalition sent ships to invade the Solar System, and much blood was shed in the fighting. In the year 2591, the war ended with a treaty, both sides exhausted from the fighting.
After this war, which came to be known as The Worlds War, there appeared a movement in the Union who wanted a strong federal government. Those who opposed this were known as Independents, while those who supported the movement were known as federalists. This federalist movement was largely supported in the population centers of Centrari B. In the coming years, the Union government gained power, and eventually reformed into a new Democracy known as the Great Trade Republic.
In the following years, this government continued to gain power, and annexed surrounding worlds. Soon, the Great Trade Republic swallowed up many of the free worlds. However, many of the farther out regions of western space were against joining the Republic, and remained free.
As the next 25th century ended, and the 26th began, humanity began trading with aliens extensively, and they exchanged technologies. From the Rufsah, humanity learns much more about hyperdrive technology, and the length of travel between stars is reduced to a few days’ time. Meanwhile, the Conglomerate spread propaganda that the aliens were evil.
In 2725, the Conglomerate declares war on the Ogoel, and begin to turn their worlds into slave states. The Ogoel allied in retaliation, and wars continued for many decades. In 2754, the game takes place.
